In the edition of «10 vor 10» of SRF – Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen from 6 May 2024, the CEO of Dreamlab Technologies, Nicolas Mayencourt, discussed with Matieu Klee the increasing focus on Swiss cyberspace by Russian hackers, especially with the upcoming peace conference at Bürgenstock. They explored the current threat landscape and how the Cyber Radar System “CyObs”, developed by Dreamlab Technologies AG, tracks vulnerabilities and attack surfaces across nations.
As a cybersecurity expert, Nick Mayencourt reveals alarming statistics: Switzerland has 3.4 million servers, with 1.7 million vulnerabilities. This means nearly every second server is at risk, posing significant security threats.
Nick emphasises that at least 90% of these vulnerabilities could be easily resolved with regular software updates and better configurations, which wouldn’t require substantial costs. Each vulnerability serves as an open invitation for spies or hackers to infiltrate.
One tool at the forefront of identifying such weaknesses is CyObs, which detects vulnerabilities within companies. For example, a pharmaceutical company connected its drug production machinery directly to the internet, making it highly susceptible to hacking. The attack tools and guides are readily available online, increasing the risk.
Nick is convinced that Russia has already begun preparing cyberattacks targeting the peace conference, potentially aiming at the power or water networks, or federal servers. This is similar to last year’s incident when President Zelensky addressed the National Council via video. He believes it’s naive to think that Russia isn’t already identifying security gaps in Switzerland.
