Ekoparty 2023: Get Ready to Uncover Exciting Honeypot Vulnerability Research

Sheila Ayelen Berta, Head of Research at Dreamlab Technologies, is set to lead a MainTrack session at Ekoparty 2023 on November 3rd at 11:20 am (ART). Ekoparty, which began as an underground hacking event in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2001, has evolved into the go-to gathering for the Latin American infosec community.

The session, titled "Oh, no, Winnie… that’s not honey! - Uncovering Honeypot’s Flawed Logic for Counter-Intelligence" will delve into the world of honeypots and their role in threat intelligence. Honeypots are indispensable tools for detecting active threats and collecting data on automated attacks. Sheila’s presentation will demonstrate how honeypots, even when extensively customised, can be easily identified and exploited for counter-intelligence purposes.

Sheila and her team have conducted thorough research in this field, examining around 40 honeypots to unveil flaws in their packet-handling mechanisms. These issues enable their identification, even when they are meticulously customised. Her research extends to a global scan analysis, aiming to reveal who deploys these honeypots and what their intentions might be.
